The South Asian Lesbian & Gay Association of New York City (SALGA) serves to promote awareness, tolerance, acceptance, empowerment and safe spaces for sexual minorities and people of all gender identities, who trace their heritage to South Asia or who identify as South Asian. Our mission is to enable community members to establish cultural visibility and take a stand against oppression and discrimination in all its forms.  We pledge to encourage leadership development, provide multi-generational support, work towards immigration advocacy, address health issues such as HIV / AIDS, and foster political involvement in the interest of creating a more tolerant society.

Love, Relationships & Marriage: Defining Heteronormative

In today’s society, we can embark on relationships that lead to marriage and, eventually, to raising a family. However, one may ask, “is this need to pair up and have a family innate for every individual?”, “is it due to our South Asian culture and heritage?”, or perhaps “is it due to influence from mainstream media?”. Ultimately, these and other questions play a role in our own definitions of what is and what isn’t hetero-normative.

Come to our February support group and engage in a lively discussion and share your perspectives on love, marriage, relationships and heteronormativity from your South Asian queer viewpoint.

As always, the topic is a guide but please feel free to bring any topic of concern to you. Support group is for you.

Date: Saturday, February 11, 2012
Time: 4 - 6pm
Location: LGBT Center, 208 West 13th Street

SALGA’s monthly support group meetings are a SAFE, CONFIDENTIAL space for you to join a group atmosphere to talk about issues that affect your life and well-being. We provide a supportive atmosphere to all attendees.
