The South Asian Lesbian & Gay Association of New York City (SALGA) serves to promote awareness, tolerance, acceptance, empowerment and safe spaces for sexual minorities and people of all gender identities, who trace their heritage to South Asia or who identify as South Asian. Our mission is to enable community members to establish cultural visibility and take a stand against oppression and discrimination in all its forms.  We pledge to encourage leadership development, provide multi-generational support, work towards immigration advocacy, address health issues such as HIV / AIDS, and foster political involvement in the interest of creating a more tolerant society.

SALGA Steering Position Announcement
BACKGROUND ON SALGA’s STEERING COMMITTEE
SALGA’s Steering Committee is composed of committed volunteers and community members, who collectively serve as the organization’s decisionmaking body. Although Steering members contribute significant hours of work (a minimum 5-10 hour commitment per week), being on SALGA Steering provides you the opportunity to work on challenging and exciting projects and be exposed to a broad range of ideas and experiences.

Youth Coordinator 
 
SALGA is looking for a Youth Coordinator to:
  • Facilitate: Coordinate and create youth programming. This involves but is not limited to overseeing the monthly youth group meetings, revising the youth curriculum as needed to create safe spaces for young people ages 24 & under, and ensuring age appropriateness and age diversity in SALGA’s general programming. 
  • Safe Spaces: While the position targets the youth population as it is an at risk population, age diversity is important to SALGA and we seek to create safe spaces for older LGBTQ South Asians, a generally underserved population. The Coordinator should be sensitive to such issues and create and maintain spaces in SALGA for such populations. 
  • Outreach: This includes creating, building and maintaining connections with other South Asian / Asian / People of Color / Health / Queer / LGBTQ community organizations and populations. Some tasks include tabling at street fairs/melas, organizing and distributing outreach materials, and referrals to specific services.
  • Participate as an active voting member of SALGA’s Steering Committee (this includes attending a monthly 3 hour steering meeting and conference call and participating in email conversations and decision making.

This position is ideal for someone who can carry a conversation, is interested in learning about different people / organizations, and will be a supportive ally.

 
Finance Coordinator
 
Finance Chair entails the following responsibilities:
  • Manage bank accounts and credit cards
  • Maintain regular and accurate financial records
  • Write checks and process reimbursements
  • Ensure that taxes are filed on time with the help of a paid accountant, if needed
  • Work closely with the Development chair to assist in grant writing and fundraising
  • Participate as an active voting member of SALGA’s Steering Committee (this includes attending a monthly 3 hour steering meeting and conference call and participating in email conversations and decision making.
Though not necessary, a financial/accounting background is desirable. Interested applicants should submit a resume and brief cover letter describing their interest/experience. Due to the sensitivity of this position, we may ask for a reference from your past employer/organization you volunteered for.
