What role can art can play in strengthening an inclusive politics that imagines equal tomorrows at a time when the world is at a crossroads, with new struggles against divisions, violence, and exclusions? Rock for Rights!! brings together some of South Asia’s most explosive musical talents crossing all genres and generations — from Sufi and electronic rock bands, to contemporary pop artists, to jazz and funk legends. Together the artists show the power of music and culture to create a platform to speak of rights, and to band together to call for peace, unity, and social justice.
Rock- for-Rights!! brings particular attention to historically underrepresented, but now critical contemporary battles – the quest for equal dignity across gender and sexuality. As we think about how to make rights relevant for these new marginalizations, we see both recent victories and setbacks in our journey. Recent trends of the feminization of poverty and the disproportionate impact of violence and exclusion across gender have challenged us to broaden and strengthen our language of rights. We must work to make them not just inclusive, but effective. Other battles remind us of victories that must rightly be celebrated. While Nepal passed historic same-sex marriage legislation and Indian activists await similar result in their legal battle against the country’s anti-gay laws. The setbacks to gay rights in California and Arkansas remind us of battles closer to here. Rock for Rights!! both celebrates and voices resistance to and beyond South Asia and the Diaspora, reminding us of our part in creating an equal world.
