Our mission is to enable community members to establish cultural visibility and take a stand against oppression and discrimination in all its forms.  We pledge to encourage leadership development, provide multi-generational support, work towards immigration advocacy, address health issues such as HIV / AIDS, and foster political involvement in the interest of creating a more tolerant society.

Sunday 11/20 - Coming Out, Coming Home w/ D’Lo

SALGA NYC presents

Coming OutComing Home”

The Culminating Reading of a Workshop Series on Coming Out

This reading is the result of a 4-week writing workshop held this past Fall. Following the success of this workshop series being presented in LA and SF with culminating readings, SALGA sponsored this year’s event to provide members of the South Asian LGBTIQQ community a platform to share their experiences in a safe and creative environment.

A strong believer in the power of personal story telling, D’Lo has created the “Coming OutComing Home” writing workshops in line with SALGA’s mission statement: to be a safe space for sexual minorities and people of all gender identities, who trace their heritage to South Asia or who identify as South Asian.

SALGA is NYC’s only organization working to raise awareness and provide resources for people who identify as South Asian and LGBTIQQ. SALGA is proud to be presenting this event at Alwan for the Arts which serves the Arab community and educates the broader public by showcasing a range of cultural events, thereby enriching the cross- cultural and artistic encounter. Alwan is committed to maintaining a space for reflection, dialogue, and growth in the arts and cultures of the peoples of the Middle East, North Africa, and the diaspora.

Date: November 20th, 2011
Time: 1-4pm
Place: Alwan for the Arts

Saturday 11/12 - Monthly Support Group

Posted: October 31st, 2011 | Author: Jimmy | Filed under: Blog, Events, News | No Comments »

Join SALGA for Our Monthly Support Group Meeting.

It’s November! Time for our third annual “thanks for the good things in our lives” support group.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, we are reminded that holidays can be a difficult time for us, especially if our families are not as accepting as we’d like them to be. But there can also be good times such as celebrating with our chosen families or taking a long overdue vacation. We do not want to ignore the hard parts but we thought we’d gather together on November 12th, and talk about the things in our lives for which we are thankful.

We look forward to hearing your stories!

As always, the topic is a guide but please feel free to bring any topic of concern to you.

Support group is for you.

Date: Saturday, November 12, 2011
Time: 4 - 6pm
Location: LGBT Center, 208 West 13th Street
