Whether it’s sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, religion… we have many facets to our identity. What parts of our identity are most important to us? How does it feel when others make assumptions about who we are? What happens when our own sense of ourselves begins to shift? … Identity can be a touchy thing, not in the least because people are always trying to tell us who we are in both subtle and not-so-subtle ways, even within our own LGBT community.

Set in India’s old Delhi, CLEAR LIGHT OF DAY is Anita Desai’s tender, warm, and compassionate novel about family scars, the ability to forgive and forget, and the trials and tribulations of familial love. At the novel’s heart are the moving relationships between the members of the Das family, who have grown apart from each other. Bimla is a dissatisfied but ambitious teacher at a women’s college who lives in her childhood home, where she cares for her mentally challenged brother, Baba. Tara is her younger, unambitious, estranged sister, married and with children of her own. Raja is their popular, brilliant, and successful brother. When Tara returns for a visit with Bimla and Baba, old memories and tensions resurface and blend into a domestic drama that is intensely beautiful and leads to profound self-understanding.

Join us for a summer potluck picnic at Central Park!  Bring along your friends and family, your badminton bats and birdies, your Frisbees and kites. Come anytime, stay as long as you want, and catch up with all your SALGA friends!

Directions:
From the West Side: Enter Central Park on the north side of 81st and Central Park West. You will immediately come to a large tree and a drinking fountain, the path splits here. Take the right-hand (more southern) path toward the Great Lawn. Cross the Bridle Path and cross the paved road. You should see a stone building with bathrooms on your right, keep going, next you pass the Delacorte Theater where they do Shakespeare in the Park. Then you should be at the southern tip of the Great Lawn. Look to your right (south, toward the pond and Belvedere Castle) and you should see us there.
From the East side: Enter the park just south of the Metropolitan Museum. Walk to the Great Lawn and find us on the southern end as above.
 
In the event of a downpour, we may take refuge under the awnings that wrap around the Delacorte. If it is raining all day then the picnic will be held on August 29th.

The SALGA Youth Group is a safe, confidential place for queer South Asians between the ages of thirteen and twenty-four to discuss issues facing our community.

Whether you need support coming out, or have questions about your legal rights as queer youth, or are just trying to connect with fellow South Asians, this is the space for you! Depending on what members want, the group can provide social events, community outings, discussions, and participation in political events.

SALGA NYC Youth is the youth branch of SALGA NYC, a volunteer organization which serves the needs the South Asian queer community both politically and socially in New York City.

Under pressure from elected officials of NYC and grassroots organizations, the organizers of India Day Parade has retreated from banning SALGA NYC to march in the India Day Parade. SALGA NYC believes that Queer Indians, like all other Indian communities, have the right to march in India Day Parade and have a right to show their Queer Desi pride!!!

Please join SALGA NYC this Sunday for a afternoon of Queer Desi Pride. We will be meeting at 12:30 at 38th Street and Madison Avenue and marching along the parade route to 26th Street and Madison Avenue.

With performances by DJ Rekha, The Kominas, Hari Kondabolu, Fair and Kind, and others, UNIFICATION 2010 will explore the politics of our motherlands, reveal the experiences of being brown outside of it, and question the tensions between us, while fostering a movement towards a more peaceful, unified South Asia.

We’re resurrecting a SALGA tradition and having a potluck!
